Two days ago the wonderful festival in Cracow came to an end. This former Polish capital is a city very much worth visiting even when there's no festival to attend. For 22 years now the final (Saturday) evening concert is a major event that draws hundreds of people to the Szeroka /Sheroka/ square, the centre of the Jewish district, called Kazimierz. My own recordings will be posted later, but here you can listen to what I thought was a stunning performance of the Alaev family from Central Asia-Bukhara, Samarkand in Uzbekistan. Familiar sounds if you know Turkish music, which originates from the same part of the world. There were great concerts this week, very different styles, from The Maghreb Orchestra to American Catskill mountain swing to Hasidic (Bobover) tish nigunim with Benzion Miller, to rock music, so-called New Jewish music. Sometime we wondered what was Jewish about it, but this is what is happening: no more klezmermusic, only some cheesy bands playing in the restaurants. There is an eagerness for new developments and styles and therefore traditional klezmer is no longer scheduled, unfortunately! Tomorrow I'll post some of my recordings, but here is the great Benzion Miller in a Cantor's concert in Amsterdam! All the concerts can now be viewed here. Just scroll down to select.
Meanwhile some wise Jewish saying: Man worries about the loss of his money, but fails to worry about the loss of his days. His money cannot help him,(while) his days will never return.
